Raising money by playing football

''The tournament doesn’t only see people from Vryheid taking part, but also from neighbouring towns like Newcastle, Dundee and Piet Retief. They all come to play soccer and make generous donations.''

School Shoe Donation Legends Tournament’ took place on Saturday at the Cecil Emmet grounds.
The tournament saw about 10 to 12 teams playing soccer as a way to donate to underprivileged primary school children. Principals of different schools were present at the grounds and watched the games as they unfolded.
One of the organizers, Nkosana Khoza, explained that, “This initiative started last year already and was hosted by AbaQulusi Legends. This time around, the tournament was hosted by Vryheid Legends. The tournament doesn’t only see people from Vryheid taking part, but also from neighbouring towns like Newcastle, Dundee and Piet Retief. They all come to play soccer and make generous donations. Each team had to donate five pairs of school shoes. We would like different sponsors to come forward and work with us in this initiative and also the community to show their support towards this project.’’
Spectators made their way to the grounds and enjoyed the matches as the different ‘legends’ battled it out on the field. The next tournament is set to be hosted by Vryheid Masters soon. They can be contacted on 071 276 0664 or 083 995 0343.
