Vicious lightning strike claims a life of a learner

The summer storms have been the most violent in recent years, say farmers.

Two schoolchildren from Mandlamasha Primary in Dannhauser, Koppie Allen, Ward 1, were tragically struck by lightning on their way home from school on Monday.

According to sources, one of the children died instantly while the other learner was taken to hospital for treatment.

This brings the number of people killed by lightning strikes in the area over the past month to four.

According to the SA Weather Services, you should consider taking the following steps when caught outdoors in a lightning storm:

Protect Yourself from Lightning Strikes

  • Never lie flat on the ground. …
  • Never shelter under an isolated tree.
  • Never use a cliff or rocky overhang for shelter.
  • Immediately get out of and away from ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water.
