Young man in Dundee court on a charge of sexual assault of a minor

This case dates back to 2018 when the victim was eight-years-old, SAPS said.

SAPS are investigating the rape of a girl, dating back to November 2018, when the victim was eight years old.
Police confirmed that the charge was only opened in March this year and a suspect, a 23-year-old man,  was arrested.

He was taken into custody and appeared in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a bail application.

The state did not oppose bail. The investigating officer, Sgt Buthelezi of the Dundee FCS unit,  submitted an affidavit giving reasons as to why the state was not opposing bail: the accused is no longer residing in Dundee, the accused has no contact with the complainant and he has a fixed address in Normandien.

The affidavit was read out as evidence by the state prosecutor Mr Mdlalose. Defence attorney, Mr Abdulla, read out the defence’s affidavit stating that the accused was diagnosed with health issues, was working in Normandien and was residing in Normandien and would not interfere with state witnesses.

Magistrate Mpongose granted bail of R 2000 with strict conditions and he was released from custody. His next court appearance will be on July 9 for a Regional Court date.

The SAPS have asked that the accused’s name not be published at this stage’ while several investigations related to an additional charge are ongoing.
