Local derby showdown looms as Glencoe pool players sharpen their skills
Pool is now the most popular sport in Glencoe, according to those who play...
Everyone loves a derby! These games have the power to kindle deep-seated passions and even ‘fence-sitters’ feel inclined to come out in support of the team they hope will win them bragging rights.
Manchester United vs Manchester City, Kaizer Chiefs vs Pirates, and Dundee High vs Sarel Cilliers are just some of the derbies that stir passions locally.

Debate over who should’ve gotten a yellow card and which goal should have been disallowed last until the next derby. That’s the nature of the game.
Now, there is a new local derby brewing, which the organisers hope will also fire up fervour. But this time, the sport is pool. Two Glencoe pubs, The Rusty Bucket and Sandy’s Sports Bar, have thrown down the gauntlet in a bid to decide who has the best pool players finally.
The two establishments are set to face off in a series of test matches culminating in a thrilling final.
The competition will consist of four ‘test matches’ , with the final match’s venue decided by the team with the most points accumulated throughout the series.
The other four games will alternate between the two pubs, ensuring that the rivalry is equally contested. Each team will feature 14 players and two reserves, with the reserves stepping in as referees on the night of the matches.
The first game is scheduled to take place in May, and both teams are already gearing up for the ultimate showdown. Pool players from both The Rusty Bucket and Sandy’s Sports Bar have been putting in hours of practice to perfect their shots and strategies ahead of the competition.
