Sarel Cilliers High School staged a week of sporting and cultural activities, with events ranging from cricket and soccer to a spelling bee and choir competition.

Cricket
The Sarel Lionesses first team returned to action on Thursday against St Dominic’s Academy. Playing on home turf, they secured victory by eight wickets.

Afrikaans spelling bee
The ATKV Uitklopspel 2025 was also held on Thursday, with eight Sarel Cilliers pupils taking part.
In the Grade 8-9 first additional language category, Sana Rawat placed third. In the Grade 10-12 home language category, Shizel Pienaar placed third and Jennalee Joubert came second.
Four learners – Rawat, Justin Duvenage, Joubert and Pienaar – will represent the school in Bloemfontein on October 15 in the final round.

Tennis and soccer
On Friday, the school’s tennis players travelled to Newcastle to compete against Ferrum High School.
Saturday saw the Girls’ Soccer Ayoba League and the Endumeni Open Soccer League hosted at Sarel Cilliers. The school’s first team soccer girls were crowned champions of the Ayoba League.

Choir competition
The highlight of the weekend was the Sarel Cilliers High School Choir Competition, featuring the internationally acclaimed Drakensberg Boys Choir.
Primary schools took the stage on Friday, with Monument Primary retaining their junior title. In the high schools’ category, Eshowe High School was named the new winner.
The Drakensberg Boys Choir performed on both days and also enjoyed friendly soccer matches against the Sarel Cilliers junior soccer team and Glencoe Primary. Their powerful singing and dance moves captivated the audience.

Sarel Cilliers High School said it was proud to host the choir and looks forward to welcoming them back next year for the Battle of the Drums competition.
