Women’s empowerment, economic independence and community safety were at the heart of a Women’s Month celebration held in Forestdale on Monday, August 10.

The JB Mchunu Foundation, in partnership with the SAPS Umzinyathi District Women’s Network, hosted the event at Forestdale Creche Hall under the Dundee Policing Precinct.

The gathering formed part of Women’s Month activities and brought together about 100 community members, including women, youth, stakeholders and representatives from community structures.

The event aimed to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women while creating opportunities for personal development and economic empowerment. It also highlighted crimes affecting women, with a particular focus on gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF).

Women were encouraged to explore opportunities that could help them become economically independent, including business, entrepreneurship, beauty care and other income-generating activities.

Speakers also stressed the importance of women supporting and uplifting one another while working collectively to overcome challenges facing women and communities.

A key message was delivered by Captain Mazibuko, the Umzinyathi District Women’s Network Champion, on behalf of SAPS KZN Provincial Women’s Network Champion Major General Francis Slambert, who was unable to attend.

Youth urged to demonstrate leadership

Captain Mazibuko placed particular emphasis on the youth of Forestdale, urging them to believe in themselves and recognise their potential.

She reminded young people that they are the future leaders of their communities but encouraged them not to wait until the future to make a difference.

Instead, they were urged to demonstrate leadership now through responsible behaviour, commitment and active participation in community development.

The event also gave women working in different businesses and fields an opportunity to share their experiences and inspire others to pursue their ambitions.

Community safety remained an important part of the discussions, with attendees encouraged to work together to prevent GBVF and protect women and children.

Among the external role-players was the Dundee Community Policing Forum chairperson, along with other community representatives.

Importance of community relationship with SAPS

Their involvement highlighted the importance of partnerships between SAPS, community structures, civil society and residents in tackling social challenges and building safer communities.

Delivering the vote of thanks, Jabulisa Mchunu of the JB Mchunu Foundation thanked the speakers, stakeholders, community members and everyone who contributed to the success of the event.

Mchunu also encouraged the Forestdale community to continue working together towards the development, progress and success of the area.

The event ended on a positive note, with a strong call for women and young people to recognise their potential, make use of available opportunities and play an active role in strengthening their community.
