Anti-crime operation nets suspects, guns and ammo
Five people were arrested during the operation
A police operation conducted on the evening of March 4 resulted in firearm-related arrests.
A tip-off led officers from the Uthukela District Zone 1 Task Team to a premises in the Esigodlweni area, where a search was conducted. A 24-year-old man was arrested after police found a firearm and ammunition. The suspect now faces charges of being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
The team then nabbed a 26-year-old man for being in possession of a homemade firearm, as well as ammunition. This suspect was also arrested in Esigodlweni and faces the same charges.

The team’s ‘tour of duty’ proved even more productive when they arrested a further three suspects, aged 22, 27 and 28. The men were travelling in a vehicle, which was intercepted and stopped. A search of the vehicle turned up a 9mm pistol and ammo. The officers also recovered a cellphone that had been stolen from a person a short while earlier.
The men face charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, as well as being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to ascertain if they have been used in any crimes in the country. All of the suspects appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on March 6.
