Osizweni police apprehend suspect for possession of illegal firearm

Osizweni Crime Prevention members successfully arrested and charged a 30-year-old man for the illegally possession of a firearm and live ammunition.

Lizzy Arumugam, of Newcastle SAPS corporate communications, said the arrest was made during an intelligence-driven operation in Osizweni on Wednesday, May 9.

“Police received a tip-off informing them of a suspect residing in the Cavan area in Sigodiphola outside Osizweni who was allegedly in possession of illegal firearms,” she said.

Upon arrival, police found one Mossberg shotgun as well as 16 live rounds of shotgun ammunition.

The estimated street value of the firearm and ammunition is believed to be around R13 000.

The suspect has since appeared in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court, and further police investigations will continue.
