Suspects appear in court for elderly woman’s murder

Department of Social Development staff picketed outside the court, demanding 'no bail' for the suspects

Five suspects appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (October 10) for the murder of Ester Zuma (63) in the Ntabamhlophe area.

After a short appearance, the case was postponed and the accused were remanded into police custody.

Four men and a woman, aged between 30 and 35, are alleged to have arrived at the Zuma homestead on Sunday, September 24, during a lobola function. It is believed that an altercation ensued between the ‘visitors’ and the elderly Ester Zuma. This culminated in a fatal shooting.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan confirmed the incident, saying, “It is alleged that the gang gate-crashed the function and robbed guests of cellphones and cash. When Ester Zuma approached them, she was shot and killed. Officers from the Public Order Policing Unit traced them to the Mooi River area, where they were arrested.”

The court was packed with community and family of the deceased on Tuesday. The case was postponed to October 17 and a formal bail application will be held on October 25.
