High Court sentences cop killer

Hawks Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, welcomed the sentence and applauded the members for their good work

The man who was arrested for killing police officer Constable Oscar Makhathini in Estcourt on February 17 has been convicted and sentenced. The Pietermaritzburg High Court sentenced 25-year-old Nkanyiso Mazibuko to 25 years’ imprisonment on Thursday (March 28).

Constable Makhathini, who was stationed at Amagwe police station, was allegedly off duty when he saw Mazibuko and an accomplice robbing a tuck shop. He drew his service pistol and tried to intervene, but was shot.

In a statement, KZN Hawks confirmed the 25-year prison sentence, saying, “After being shot, Constable Makhathini was taken to hospital for medical attention and was declared dead on arrival. A case of murder and armed robbery was reported at Estcourt police station and the case docket was allocated to the Hawks for investigation. Information was received that Mazibuko was also shot during the robbery and was in hospital. Hawks members went to the hospital and he was placed under arrest.’’

Mazibuko was charged with murder and armed robbery, and was also sentenced to 15 years for armed robbery. The sentences will run concurrently.
