Police arrest suspects for illegal firearms and ammunition

All the recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing

The Estcourt Visible Policing Unit, uThukela District Task Team and Ezakheni Visible Policing Unit, respectively, recovered eight illegal firearms and arrested six suspects during a recent operation.

Two revolvers and a shotgun were recovered during police operations in the Wembezi area, and two suspects were arrested for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

In another incident, Ezakheni Visible Policing officers, together with members of the uThukela District Task Team, made an arrest after following up on information concerning a murder suspect. The tip-off led the officers to the Majola area of Weenen, where they stopped a previously identified vehicle. Upon searching the car, they found a 9mm pistol with 12 rounds of ammunition. The driver was taken into police custody.

The team then made their way to a homestead, where they arrested a suspect who was in possession of a hunting rifle.

In Estcourt on Saturday evening (May 25), Estcourt Visible Policing officers received information about a person who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm. They rushed out to Cornfields, where they located a 43-year-old suspect who was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with five rounds of ammunition. The suspect will appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court.

In Ladysmith, officers from the Ekuvukeni Visible Policing Unit acted swiftly on information they received about a person firing shots in the Nazareth area. They located the residence, where they found a 20-year-old male who was found in possession of a .38 revolver with two rounds of ammunition. He failed to produce a licence for the weapon and will appear in the Ekuvukeni Magistrate’s Court. He faces charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. A further charge related to discharging a firearm may be added to the charge sheet.

Finally, officers in the Bergville area recovered an abandoned revolver while pursuing suspects in a robbery case.
