Madadeni courts hands convicted rapist a life sentence behind bars
A man, who raped a woman who was walking home after visiting her boyfriend, was jailed for life when he appeared last week in the Madadeni Regional Court.
Manqoba Dube (29) and an accomplice attacked the woman in Osizweni one evening in December 2018.
Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, the NPA Regional (KZN Division) spokesperson said the victim was able to identify the accomplice.
“They took her to an open field where they took turns raping her. They left her in the field and fled,” said Ramkisson-Kara.
The victim was able to get home where she reported the incident to her family who reported the rape to the police.
She was taken to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre for the necessary support and medical treatment.
Police arrested Dube shortly afterwards. However, his co-accused is still at large.
In court, Prosecutor Cindy-Lee Alberts led the testimonies of the complainant and her parents. DNA samples linking Dube to the rape and the evidence of the TCC doctor further bolstered the state’s case.
“In her evidence, the victim told the court that the incident has left her traumatised, and she is now fearful even to leave her house,” she said.
Dube was sentenced to life imprisonment and was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The court also ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
“The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution. Working together with our partners in law enforcement, we will strive to turn the tide against gender-based violence,” concluded Ramkisson-Kara.
