Man jailed for life after confessing to murdering common law wife
A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the Madadeni Regional Court for murdering his wife in Jakkalspan, KwaZulu-Natal.
A man who confessed to strangling his wife to death after accusing her of infidelity has been jailed for life when he appeared last week in the Madadeni Regional Court.
The court heard that on the night of July 11, 2024, the 41-year-old man got into an argument at their home in Jakkalspan.
The couple had been living together as husband and wife since the accused had paid part of the lobola to her family and had four children together.
Accusing her of infidelity, the argument escalated, and she was strangled.
The man then walked to his brother’s house, where he confessed to the murder and said he would hand himself over to the police.
He then walked to the police station to report the crime. Police accompanied him back to his home, where he showed them his wife’s body.
He was arrested and charged with murder.
In court, Prosecutor Zama Zikalala presented the testimony of the accused’s brother and the police official who had received the confession.
The post-mortem results were also submitted as evidence.
During sentencing, Zikalala informed the court that the accused had a prior conviction for assaulting his wife.
The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
Welcoming the sentencing, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, Regional Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal, said, “we remain committed to addressing gender-based violence and femicide. Our goal is to ensure justice is delivered in a timely and decisive manner.”
