CRIME: Girl dies after vehicle strikes her on N11 bypass

A family has been left devastated after their 11-year-old daughter was killed when she was struck by a vehicle on the N11 bypass near Ncandu Park on Monday morning (November 17).
According to witnesses, the girl was walking along the bypass at around 11:30 when a motorist struck her.
Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, SAC Lizzy Arumugam, confirmed that the incident occurred near the Drakensberg Drive Bridge and said that the girl’s friends were able to identify her at the scene.
Arumugam added that the driver did not attempt to drive away from the scene. Although he has not been arrested, a case of culpable homicide has been opened and will remain subject to further police investigation.
The Newcastle Advertiser extends its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
In light of the tragedy, Arumugam issued the following safety tips for children walking to and from school:
- Stay on the pavement and use designated crossing points.
- Look both ways before crossing, even when traffic lights are green.
- Never run into the road.
- Be visible – wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions.
- Walk with a trusted adult or in a group whenever possible
