Pothole Patrol: We introduce Dundee’s ‘Big Five’
Photographs of the worst offenders have been sent to the municipality for comment.
We all know them, we all hate them and we all complain about them.
Like a virulent disease, potholes tend to mutate, grow and multiply. Ideal conditions for this ‘growth’ include water from infrastructure leaks, heavy truck traffic and a lack of maintenance. This cocktail for disaster exists in Endumeni, where a ‘pothole patrol’ exercise brought to the fore the worst of the ‘species’. It is difficult to say which ones are the best (worst), but Oldacre Street in front of the Ramakrishna Centre must be in the ‘Premier Division’, along with Head Street and Hosking Street (in Strathmore), while Browning Street in front of the Catholic Church is now a dangerous route to take.
Other contenders for ‘best pothole’ include Beaconsfield Street, near the Karel Landman Street intersection (exacerbated by an ongoing water leak), Douglas Street (recently destroyed by diverted coal trucks) and Willson Street near Standard Bank.
Photographs of the worst offenders have been sent to the municipality for comment. When this is forthcoming, it will be published. In the meantime, readers are invited to be on the lookout for some of their favourites.
Photos can be sent to dundee.courier@caxton.co.za – the potholes will be monitored for any repairs and this will also be reported on.
In Ward 7, Glencoe, Cllr Saleem Abdool has said that ‘with careful planning’, he has managed to allocate funds from the ward allocation to carry out pothole repairs in certain roads.
