‘Featherless bird’ lands on donkey field

Residents flocked to the field to have a look at the massive and impressive helicopter

When load-shedding hits and everything goes quiet in town, the sound of a helicopter is sure to attract attention. A Bell 222 helicopter landed on Vryheid High School’s hockey field (donkey field) last week. Frikkie Bekker from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services and his team did the groundwork to make for a safe landing. The helicopter is a ‘rapid on-call emergency transport’ aircraft, better known as a rocket response helicopter. The helicopter came from Johannesburg to transport a patient from the private hospital to another facility, but unfortunately the pilots had to leave with an empty ‘cargo’, since the patient’s health was too unstable for transportation. The Bell 222 helicopter is described as the ‘Ferrari of helicopters’, as explained by the pilot, and has a fully functioning intensive care unit (ICU) with two expert paramedics to take care of patients. Residents flocked to the field to have a look at the massive and impressive helicopter, and to have a chat to the pilots regarding this ‘iron bird’.
