Ensuring a safer festive season for all
Law enforcement and awareness were the priorities at the Mooi River SAPS Safer Festive Season launch
The N3 is one of the busiest national routes in the country and this is especially true during the December / January period when thousands of people make their way to holiday destinations during the festive season break.
To ensure safety and compliance on the road, law enforcement officers joined hands with stakeholders to launch the Mooi River SAPS Safer Festive Season on December 9.
The launch was also to raise awareness about the 16 Days of Activism as well as the Community in Blue Patrollers.
“This joint operation was to launch off the Safer Festive Season initiative with an awareness campaign where we raised awareness on gender-based violence, teen pregnancy, police killings, buying of stolen property and safety tips,” said Scherry du Toit from the Mooi River SAPS.
The day started with a multi-disciplinary roadblock that was set up in Mooi River on the N3 southbound just after the main toll from 10:00 to 12:00.

A total of 244 persons were searched and 217 vehicles were checked for road worthiness, expired licenses and stolen motor vehicles.
Five fines were issued for traffic violations, two of which were for trucks.
This operation was also the launch of the Mooi River SAPS Community in Blue Patrollers concept.
“The community members applied through the Mooi River SAPS. A committee was then formed with 10 individuals and each signed a code of conduct. Planning meetings were held at Mooi River SAPS with the members on how best we can all help the community. These individuals will assist during and after the festive season by volunteering their time to help the police with awareness campaigns held at roadblocks, schools and in the town itself. They will also do foot patrols and report any illegal activity taking place. Also they will assist with the community in general on how we can help improve as the SAPS to serve and protect our beautiful town,” explained Du Toit.
Members that assisted during the Safer Festive Season included Mooi River SAPS, Flying Squad Hilton, Durban, Mpofana Traffic Department, Midway RTI, Pietermaritzburg RTI, N3TC, Mpofana Fire Department, Ladysmith VCIU, Mpofana Mayor and her members, Lifeline and the Community in Blue Patrollers.
