Three people confirmed dead following devastating floods

Three people, including an infant, died when the area was again hit by widespread flooding this past weekend.

According to a statement released by COGTAKZN, the victims were identified as Nokubonga Mchunu (22) and Thulani Mabaso (52).

They were swept away while attempting to cross a large body of water in the Dannhauser municipal area. Tragically, the infant died after the family’s home was flooded in ward 25.

Bongi Sithole Moloi, the MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, led mop-up operations in the Amajuba district and visited bereaved families on Monday, February 13 during her visit to the district to provide interim relief.

The MEC, along with the Amajuba District’s political leadership and senior officials from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, inspected flood-damaged areas in Newcastle’s CBD which suffered widespread damage.

Two people are still missing in the Mkhanyakude District after being swept away while attempting to cross a flooded river in Ngwavuma.

“We continue to urge residents to exercise extreme caution as the inclement weather conditions may persist,” COGTA said in a statement.

The Provincial Disaster Management Centre is collaborating with social partners and all municipalities to ensure that assessments are completed and the appropriate steps are taken to assist affected communities.
