uThukela staff protest outside their offices
Motorists are advised to use alternate routes until the strike is over

Update: The area has been cleared and the roads are now open. Staff returned to their premises after a meeting with uThukela management.
uThukela staff are currently striking in front of their offices in Lyell/Forbes Street. The workers say that their employer broke the agreement that was reached after the last industrial action and they are unhappy with what’s going on at the district municipality.

One staff member, who wishes to remain anonymous, said they want the municipal manager to step down, as they have not been given what was promised to them. He said it is a political issue, as Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) staff get paid, but those belonging to the ANC do not.
The angry and frustrated protesters are making their voices heard by burning tyres outside the uThukela offices.
Public Safety and police are monitoring the situation, and Alfred Duma fire-fighters also responded to the scene.
