Municipality prioritises the rehabilitation of road infrastructure impacted by recent floods

Newcastle Municipality says tremendous progress has been ‘in gathering resources and experience to mitigate the catastrophic impact of recent floods on municipal roads.’

Following the destruction of the town’s infrastructure caused by flash floods, the municipality has undertaken an eight-week operation to restore mobility on highly flooded roads in Madadeni, Osizweni, Blaauwbosch, and neighbouring districts.

Cllr Musa Thwala, portfolio chairperson, said during a technical services reporting session that he was ‘pleased to announce that the team had successfully procured various yellow plant machines with the intent of quickly responding to sinkholes and potholes caused by recent flooding, as well as carrying out additional emergency repair work.’

Mayor Cllr. Xolani Dube welcomed the arrival of the equipment with great enthusiasm, emphasising that the project also aimed to address sewage spills caused by flash floods and to clean out all drainage systems.

“Service delivery is about working quickly to ensure that public service delivery objectives are met. This municipality has a common vision for infrastructure development and a reliable transportation system. This project reflects the municipality’s renewed efforts to ensure a pothole-free town and safe roads for our communities.”

The massive task of rehabilitating all identified municipal flood-damaged roads will be led by specialist engineers and work will begin this week.
