Letter to the Editor – We all have a role to play in saving water

The lion’s share of the country’s annual rainfall, which is for household use, industrial, agricultural, and other activities, is usually experienced in the summer.

The summer is behind us now, and less rain equates to less water in the storages, and this affects the supplier of water negatively.

Let us not use water carelessly with the misconception that the country has more than enough because we are a water-scarce country.

The reality of the matter is that being circumspect in the manner in which we utilize water is not optional; we are actually obligated to do so.

The culture of saving water during rainfall seasons should be inculcated in all water users to ensure that we do not experience water shortages during dry seasons, such as the upcoming winter.

Municipalities should work around the clock to fix as many leaks as possible because this is one of the biggest contributors to water losses in the country and it affects the provision of water to the public adversely.

Municipalities should dedicate a toll-free number that can be shared with communities strictly for water leakage reporting and burst pipes, with dedicated warm bodies to respond and attempt to address the challenges.

Should your report not receive the desired attention, water users can escalate the matter to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s toll-free number, 0800 200 200.
