Students and police clash after arrest of protester

Rubber bullets were used to disperse about 300 protesters

A protest involving students at the Mnambithi TVET campus in Walton Street turned ugly this morning (March 12) after a student was arrested and detained by police.

The student was taken to the police station, with protesters then descending on the police station to demand the student’s release.

After the crowd of over 300 protesters refused to listen to an order to disperse, police using shotguns engaged the students in a running battle around the police station.

Several protesters ran down Murchison Street after police used rubber bullets to disperse them. Dozens hid in nearby businesses as police opened fire with rubber bullets.

Several students were detained by police, with the protest effectively ending shortly before 11:00.
