Ward councillor engages with community at district hospital

Some of the concerns raised were the lack of a reliable water supply at the hospital

On Wednesday morning last week, on the eve of Human Rights Day, the Democratic Alliance (DA) spent the morning outside Vryheid District Hospital. Representing Ward 9 in AbaQulusi Local Municipality, the purpose of the DA hosting a public information table near the hospital premises was to engage with the public and to gauge feedback from those using the hospital’s services.
The DA, represented in Ward 9 by Councillor Magda Viktor, informed the Vryheid Herald that the party is gravely concerned about the lack of water supply to the hospital, which negatively affects the delivery of services to patients. The DA states that water is a basic human right and that all South Africans are entitled to clean water. They are also of the opinion that the newly-proposed NHI Bill, as it stands, will not provide universal healthcare to the people of South Africa. Instead, it will only nationalise healthcare and as a result, it will bring the same corruption and mismanagement that has become a daily reality at so many state-run institutions.
DA activists, who were also present, engaged with the public to find out their views on healthcare. Some of the concerns raised were the lack of a reliable water supply at the hospital, the poor state of roads leading to the hospital, lack of empathy from certain nursing staff, and the cost of transportation to get to the hospital.
The DA believes that a caring government must ensure that accessible, affordable, high-quality healthcare is available to every South African.
