Newcastle celebrates Africa Month

Newcastle Municipality held an event to honour African heritage in celebration of Africa Month.

The Newcastle community gathered at the Osizweni Hall on May 11 to commemorate the day with engaging dialogue, singing and dancing to acknowledge Africa and its rich and diverse cultures.

This year’s event focussed largely on the youth and the importance of teaching them about their heritage to nurture pride in their identity and ancestry.

Under the theme of ‘Umsamo’, which is the hub of ancestral wisdom, the event gave a platform to the experts who led engaging conversations with an emphasis on the importance of preserving one’s cultural legacy.

Present on the day was Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube who took to the stage and encouraged the youth to uphold their beliefs and observe cultural customs. “By empowering the next generation with cultural identity and values, we can build a vibrant and inclusive future for all,” he stated.
