Mohamed Midas League celebrates its APL 10th anniversary
The Angling Professional League (APL) hosted League 3 at Sandford on October 20 after a long break from competitive angling due to the fasting.
Breakwaters AC were aiming to end the unbeaten run of current league champions Dannhauser AC, who had already bagged League 1 and 2.
Despite the valiant attempt by Breakwaters AC, who notched up 83 points, it was Dannhauser AC who emerged victorious with 98 points and is destined to be crowned the League Champions for the current season.
Stillwaters AC reinforced their team by fielding a full contingent of 25 anglers, with many newcomers to the Angling Professional League.
They scored 41 points, followed by Challengers AC on 27 points and Freshwater Spartans AC with 21 points.
The league standings see Dannhauser AC at the summit with 30 points, followed by Breakwaters AC on 24 points, Stillwaters AC (16 points), Freshwater Spartans AC on 12 points, and Challengers AC on 8 points.
The standout angler of the day was Sabelo Zwane of Dannhauser AC, who at the boom gate at Zone A prior to the commencement of the competition in a friendly banter mentioned that he was going to be the angler of the day.
True to his word, he had a good haul of fish, bagging 14 points to be crowned the ‘angler of the day’, winning a 20-piece dinner set, R200, an outright trophy, and the red cap.
The current title contenders are:
- MI Ahmed of (DAC – heaviest scaled fish category – carp of 3,532 kg in L1)
- Nishen Ramduth ( Breakwaters AC – rare species – yellow fish of 1,224 kg in L2)
- Erica Du Plooy (FSAC – Lady Angler of the Year – 4 points)
- Rishlyn Bhageloo (BAC – Junior Angler of the Year – 7 points)
- Matthew Shunmugam (BAC – Senior Angler of the Year – 11 points)
- MI Ahmed (Bhai) of ( DAC Angler of the Year – 25 points)
- Ashveer Kunju (SAC -18 points)
- Santosh Balram (DAC – 17 points).
Top anglers per club are:
- Yusuf Amedjee (Breakwaters AC – 15 points)
- Fanie Els (Challengers – AC 5 points)
- Akheel Singh (FSAC – 12 points).
As this is the tenth anniversary of the APL, the top three anglers of the year will receive spectacular prizes at a special prize-giving function at the end of the season.
The family weekend for the top angler of the season will be at a special venue.
All prizes in the various categories will remain a surprise to the membership of the APL; however, it will be worth their effort and moment of crowning glory.
The next fixture of the APL will be the AA Coaches Knock-Out Eliminator at Sandford on November 10, with the top clubs advancing to the semi-final. The intense rivalry amongst the clubs has the making of another fascinating season.
