Man sentenced to life for the rape of a minor
The Madadeni Regional Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in November 2023.
According to Natasha Ramkisson-Kara (NPA Regional Spokesperson – KZN Division) the victim lived in the same house together with her cousins, her grandmother, and her grandmother’s boyfriend (the accused).
On November 2, 2023, the victim was alone at home with the accused, as her grandmother was at work and her cousins were at school.
“She did not go to school because her exams were over. On this day, the accused called her to his room and raped her. The next day, when they were alone again, he raped her once more,” said Ramkisson-Kara.
On both occasions, she said, he [the accused] threatened to assault her [the victim] if she told anyone about what he had done.
The following day, when the victim realised that she would spend another day alone with the accused, she decided to tell her cousins about the rapes.
The incident was the reported to the police, and the accused was subsequently arrested. She was taken to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) for the necessary support.
In aggravation of the sentence, Prosecutor Cindy-Lee Alberts led the testimony of the victim, who told the court that the incident had left her emotionally scarred and fearful.
In addition to the life sentence, the accused was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
The court also ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.
“The NPA welcomes this successful prosecution. We hope that sentences of this nature demonstrate that we and our partners in the justice cluster are serious about fighting the scourge of sexual offences and gender-based violence,” concluded Ramkisson-Kara.
