According to the person who called the ambulance, Opperman used to buy food at a restaurant in Murchison Street. On the day in question, they noticed he wasn’t feeling well; he was vomiting and showing signs of dizziness. An ambulance was called, which took him to Ladysmith Regional Hospital.

Opperman told those who knew him that he was originally from Newcastle.
