Three arrested for murder of prison warder

Three men have been arrested for the murder and robbery of a 57-year-old prison warder, following a successful operation by the Amajuba District Detective Task Team.

The arrests was a result of the assistance of Barnard Security’s Marius Smith, together with Warrant Officer Singh and Newcastle SAPS.

The victim was discovered dead, his hands and feet bound, in his house on March 27, 2024, the day of the crime.

The suspects were later found to have hijacked several things from the house of the victim, including his car, his firearm, two cellphones, and television set.

Through tireless work of investigation, the police had detained the initial suspect, who was in possession of one of the victim’s stolen cellphones.

In interrogation, he led officers to the second suspect, who was found with the victim’s gun and a second cellphone. The second suspect now faces additional charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The third suspect was apprehended, and the stolen vehicle was recovered in Ntendeka, Osizweni, while the missing television was found in Blaaubosch.

The three suspects were produced before the Newcastle Magistrates’ Court on February 13. The police are yet to conclude investigations.

The authorities have praised the swift and synchronized action by the task team, citing that such actions were critical in bringing justice to the victim and his family.
