Nofta celebrates the ‘heart of the home’ with two special Mother’s Day events

“God could not be everywhere. Therefore, He created mothers.”

These were the opening remarks of Nofta (Newcastle Organisation for the Aged) chairperson, Morris Gajoo, as he invited guests at the Mothers’ Day event, to celebrate their ‘mothers, grandmothers and mother figures’.

This year, Nofta did things a little differently, hosting one event to spoil its elderly members on Wednesday afternoon, May 14, and a second function for the public on Saturday evening, May 17.

Gajoo explained that this was done to treat members without inconveniencing those among them who took chronic medication and went to bed early.

He further explained that the reason, the event wasn’t hosted on Mother’s Day, itself, was to allow members the opportunity to spend this important day with their families.

During Saturday’s event, Nofta’s Glamorous Mother was crowned. While Gythrie Somaroo won the title by lucky draw, all the lucky mothers who made it into the top five in the competition received a number of exciting sponsored prizes.

The evening was concluded with a hearty dinner and entertainment by The Trio and Nikki.

“Mothers are the glue that binds us together and the foundation upon which we build our lives. Happy Mother’s Day,” concluded Gajoo.
