AbaQulusi load-reduction leaves communities without electricity

AbaQulusi communities face daily outages as load-reduction sparks growing frustration and protests.

Residents in Mondlo, Hlobane, Vaalbank and Cliffdale are facing daily power cuts after AbaQulusi Local Municipality announced load-reduction on Friday, September 5. Electricity is switched off from 05:00 to 09:00 in the mornings and from 17:00 to 21:00 each evening.

The municipality said the measure is necessary due to widespread non-payment and illegal connections, which have placed heavy strain on the local electricity network. Load-reduction targets specific areas where the system is under pressure, temporarily cutting power to protect transformers and other infrastructure. Unlike national load-shedding, this is applied only to affected areas.

Tensions over electricity supply escalated on September 10, when residents in Mondlo staged protests against the ongoing outages and the municipality’s handling of service delivery. The protest reflects growing frustration among communities, who say they are left without reliable power and adequate communication from local authorities.
