NPC and its employees have again rolled up their sleeves to make a difference through the company’s flagship community initiative, the Day of Doing Good.
Two years after becoming part of the Huaxin Cement Group, the programme continues to positively impact communities around NPC’s operations in the South Coast (Margate Quarry and Simuma), Newcastle, and Durban.
Originally designed as a volunteer initiative for NPC employees, the programme has grown to include employees’ families, suppliers, and contractors.
This year, NPC has introduced a fresh approach. Not only will volunteers dedicate their time and skills to meaningful community projects, but they will also join team-building activities afterwards to strengthen relationships and teamwork.
The 2025 Day of Doing Good began in Newcastle on September 13 at Bambisizwe Special School, which supports children with disabilities.
Volunteers planted vegetables, painted the sensory room, and provided new sensory toys to aid learning. The day concluded with friendly games of football and netball.
On September 14, the Margate team hosted a beach clean-up in honour of World Environment Month, an initiative that will be mirrored later by the Durban plant on September 20. Both teams will round off their efforts with enjoyable group activities by the shore.
The Simuma and Sterkspruit plants will participate in the September 20 efforts.
- Simuma will support Kwaluhlaza Primary School by installing a fence around its sports field, followed by a sports day for volunteers, employees’ children, and pupils from the school.
- Sterkspruit will uplift Skhethuxolo High School by renovating its kitchen and revitalising the school’s vegetable garden.
