Armed robbery at Pongola grocery store steals R1.6 million

Four men robbed Pongola Shoprite, stole R1.6 million, and fled without causing injuries.

A dramatic armed robbery unfolded at the Shoprite branch in Pongola City Mall this morning (Tuesday) at approximately 06:15.

Suspects enter through staff back entrance

According to information received, four men gained entry to the store through the staff back entrance. The suspects threatened the on-duty security guard with a firearm before forcing their way inside.

Manager held at gunpoint

Two of the men held the manager at gunpoint and demanded that she opened the safe. The manager complied, and the suspects removed approximately R1.6 million packing it into bags before fleeing via the same back entrance.

Police investigation underway

SAPS sources not authorised to speak to the media told the Vryheid Herald that the robbery is under investigation. The police sources confirmed the incident, saying, “The suspects threatened the staff and forced the manager to open the safe. We are following all leads to apprehend the perpetrators.”

No injuries reported

No injuries were reported. The motive is believed to be self-enrichment.
