Rotary walk raises record funds for school shoes

Rotary walk raises R15,610 to provide school shoes for learners in Dundee and Glencoe.

Rotary Club of Dundee encouraged residents to keep active while supporting a meaningful cause at its recent Walk for School Shoes fundraiser.

Held on Saturday, January 24, at Dundee Golf Club, the event raised an unprecedented R15,610.

The golf club generously waived its usual R20 per walker fee and made its facilities available to Rotary for the day.

Community steps up for learners

A total of 115 enthusiastic walkers and runners took part, raising R10,910. A further R4,700 was received through in-kind donations from supportive community members.

Bev Garner of the Rotary Club said principals from 13 schools in the Dundee and Glencoe area have now been offered shoes for selected learners.

“Naturally, this process must be handled carefully to ensure that the right size shoe is issued to the right child. In keeping with Rotary policy, the entire R15,610 will be spent on shoes,” she said.

Thanks to favourable pricing from Charlies SuperSPAR Dundee and other local outlets, a significant number of shoes will be purchased and distributed. Final figures will be confirmed once procurement is complete.

Rotary has already announced that another Walk fundraiser is planned for March.
