Man arrested with AK-47 assault rifle in Sibongile operation

A crime sweep conducted by SAPS resulted in the seizing of the illegal firearm.

An intelligence-driven operation in Sibongile location, under the Dundee policing precinct, led to the arrest of a 50-year-old man on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Siyabonga Nkwanyana, Umzinyathi District Crime Intelligence, working together with Newcastle Public Order Policing, conducted the operation.

Nkwanyana said the suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition.
“The suspect was arrested after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm (AK-47) with ammunition,” he confirmed.

The accused is expected to soon appear in the Dundee Magistrate’s Court.
