Paterson Street residents living in the railway houses say they are yet to be attended to or even acknowledged by the municipality, despite several attempts to get help with fixing the roads in the area.

Community ward representative Mr V Singh says residents have been pleading for municipal assistance for years.

He has even gone as far as communicating directly with the mayor, yet their pleas for assistance have seemingly fallen on deaf ears.

Residents say pleas have gone unanswered

“Look at the state of the roads here! Our road specifically is just a dirt road, so when it rains it becomes muddy and slippery, and we cannot leave or return to our homes without a struggle,” said Singh.

Singh and the rest of the residents say they are at their wits’ end waiting for service delivery while watching their neighbourhood fall into an almost irreparable state.

The Newcastle Advertiser has sent Newcastle Municipality several media enquiries regarding the state of Paterson Street, particularly the section around the railway houses.

To date, these enquiries have not been addressed.
