St Dominics launches club to boost athletics excellence

St Dominics launches a new high-performance athletics club to develop young talent, inspired by Olympian Bayanda Walaza’s sporting success.

Curro Hazeldean Olympian, Bayanda Walaza, is setting the standard for athletic excellence at schools across South Africa.

Seizing the opportunity, St Dominics Newcastle officially launched its Athletics Club on Monday, October 20.

Head of High School, Etienne Smit extended a warm welcome to all attendees and special guests, including Manus Hendriks and his team from Curro Athletics, as well as Coach T, Bayanda’s mentor, who have been instrumental in shaping the Olympian’s journey.

With the introduction of the St Dominics Newcastle Athletics Club, the aim is to develop athletics within schools and provide opportunities for athletes to grow and compete.

“This evening’s launch is not just about athletics as a sport,” Smit stated, “it is about fitness, conditioning, and the development of physical and mental strength.”

As St Dominics Newcastle develops its athletics club, the short-term vision will be on track events, where they can immediately begin training and competition.

The team that will be leading their sports vision for 2026 is:
  • Dean Bond – head of high school sport and co-ordinator,
  • Norman Mtsweni – head of primary school sport, and
  • Sandile Mthembu – athletics specialist coach.

Although on school premises, the club will welcome members of the public and learners from other schools.
