In isiZulu they are called “umnduze” and are used to treat infected wounds, treat colds and generally reduce swelling.
Apparently the correct dosage can also ease childbirth and stimulate milk production to feed the newborn baby. In local belief systems, they are planted outside peoples homes to ward off evil.
They grow from a large bulb and as mentioned are currently decorating our beautiful grassland landscapes (along with a multitude of other flowering beauties).
