Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders score record breaking 47-12 victory in Puma Premier Division

The Newcastle Boschpick Highlanders recorded their biggest win yet in the Puma Premier League, beating Bethal 47-12 after leading 26-0 in the first half.

Andrè ‘Swanie’ Swanepoel, head coach, said at times the game was scrappy, but that his team ‘proved that a mistake at this level will get you punished.’

“Their first three tries were as a result of mistakes made by Bethal. With a lead of 26-0 and a bonus point for four tries, the Highlanders managed to score three more tries in the second half, scoring seven tries to two,” he said.

The Highlanders scrums were very strong which put Bethal under tremendous pressure. After Shaka Nkosi (12) left the field following an injury, the backline lost their punch as Nkosi proved to be a handful for Bethal every time he got the ball.

Shaka Nkosi (12) leaves the field following an injury.

“Our rucks and lineouts will have to improve, as one or two of our kick-offs were poorly executed. Among the forwards, Khusta (7) had a good game, but the pick of the forwards and man of the match was Fernando Filipi (1), while Nkosi (12) and Vedgie (11) caught our eye in the backline,” he said.

Swanpoel made special mentions of the following players:

  • Filipi (1), Ryan (18), Wessel (15), Nkosi (12), Vedgie (11), Khusta (7), and Moyane (14) managed to score seven tries throughout the match.
  • Pierre Booysen (10) scored four conversions, and Jean Oosthuizen (21) scored two conversions.

The Highlanders second team also enjoyed victory, beating the Flying Eagles in the NKZNRU division 22-19.

  • The Highlanders first and second teams will face Middleburg in an away game on Saturday.
