Newcastle Legends finally take revenge on Ladysmith

The "Old Crocs" from Newcastle and Ladysmith laced up for games at the Fernwood Sports on Sunday (June 1).

In the opening game, Ladysmith Legends, a team Newcastle had fallen to in their previous three meetings, faced off against Newcastle Legends.

The game started slowly with the home team desperate not to lose for a fourth time in a row to Ladysmith.

Omesh Singh, who was brought in by Jairus, gave Newcastle the early advantage.

Later in the half, Akesh Dawlall sprung the off-side trap and floated the ball over the charging Ladysmith goalie midway to double Newcastle’s lead.

Ladysmith increased the intensity and had their hosts on the ropes. The visitors got a goal back when Newcastle goalie, Shani Balraj, had his pass intercepted by Jomo, who shot straight into the net.

As halftime approached, Stephen Pillai, a recent arrival to Newcastle, outran two opponents before laying the ball off to Omesh Singh, who blasted it into the net.

Newcastle won by three goals to one.

In the other game, Amajuba Masters and Osizweni Masters engaged in combat.

The game proceeded at a steady tempo with Amajuba missing two excellent chances. Through China, Osizweni seized the lead in the second half. However, Amajuba soon equalised.

The match looked certain to end in a draw until Bongani’s deft midfield manoeuvres, in which he danced past three Osizweni players, created an opportunity for Tembiso to score.

This left Amajuba and the Newcastle Legends to battle it with Legends missing two golden opportunities. Through Tembiso, Amajuba gained the lead. Newcastle made an effort, but they were unable to score with Amajuba netting another goal in the second half.

A game between Osizweni and Ladysmith followed which saw the visitors grab the lead through a corner taken by Jomo. Applying further pressure, Ladysmith’s front men skilfully linked together to score a second goal. Osizweni got some extra energy in the second half which saw China pull a goal back and soon made the score 2-2.

Unnecessary mistakes were made as fatigue started to overcome both teams. However, Ladysmith scored the winning goal after catching Osizweni, who were playing out of the back, off guard.

The “Old Crocks” put on some brilliant displays of football.
