Highlanders pull off historic first women’s senior league game
Newcastle Highlanders and Sentraal Rugby Club made history by playing the first-ever Women's Senior League game at Arbor Park on Saturday
Highlanders came from behind to win the game 37-32 after Sentraal led 19-12 at halftime. The match was a seesaw battle until the last 10 minutes, when Highlanders took control and secured the victory.
Both teams showcased outstanding talent. Ulender Khumalo (14) demonstrated why she is part of the Sharks team, scoring five tries for Highlanders.
Highlanders’ Wandile, (No. 8), Amanda (No. 9), Andiswa (No 5) and Simphiwe (No. 3) displayed impressive skill. For Sentraal, No. 9 and No. 11 were particularly strong on the day.
Points: Akhona 1, Khumalo (14) 5 tries, Nicole kicked 3 conversions.
In the main game, Highlanders 3 played against Highlanders 4 in a Division 3 league match, with team 3 winning 66-22.
All five Highlanders teams will be in action this Saturday. Teams 1 and 2 will face Secunda, Team 3 will play Utrecht, Team 4 will face Ladysmith, and the Women’s team will play against Bears Women, all at Arbor Park Sports grounds, starting at 14:00.
