New member Simon Pierson kindly sponsored prizes for his last bowling session before relocating.

The fortunate prize winners of the afternoon were Billy Nicholas, Simon Ball and Johan Coetzee. The club chicken competition played last Saturday attracted a healthy field and the chickens were won by Roger Jackets, Colin Broderick, Jan Pretorious and Alex Zaal.

Volksrust Bowling Club hosted the KZNCB Champions of Champions last weekend with 15 men and 12 lady singles champions representing their respective clubs. The women played in four sections and the winner in each section was Sharon Nicol (Empangeni CC), Veronica Malan (Klipbank), Liefie Oosthuisen (Harrismith) and Ronel Greef (Richards Bay) respectively.

Both semi finals games were close affairs with Veronica edging out Ronel in an excellent game and Liefie getting the better of Sharon.

The final between Liefie and Veronica produced bowls of a high standard with Veronica’s consistent drawing giving her the edge to deservedly win the coveted title.

The five section winners in the men’s division were Phil Rooke (Bergville), Phillip Scheepers (Vryheid), Tony de Poorter (Volksrust), Sid Price (Newcastle) and Andre Vivier (Harrismith).

In probably the best game of the weekend, playing in the preliminary play-off round, spectators were given an exhibition of top class bowls in the game between Phillip and Phil.

Trading shot for shot, Phillip eventually edged out his game opponent to advance to the semi-final.

In the semi-finals, Sid beat André and Tony staged a good comeback after being well down to beat Phillip.

In the final, Sid battled to find his earlier form and with Tony drawing more consistently, Tony won the game to become the 2014 Champion of Champions.
