The Northern zone senior singles championships were hosted by Vryheid Bowling Club last weekend.
The women played a cross sectional format with Delene Louw (Mahawane CC), Margaret van Heusden and Marie Botha all winning three of their four games in Section 1 with Delene winning the section on a count out. The other section was won by Lorraine Vincent (Vryheid) who won all four of her games and then continued her fine form to beat Delene in the final.
In the play-off for third and fourth place Phyllis Reis (Dundee) beat Margaret van Heusden (V).
The five section winners in the men’s event were Doug Slabbert (Dundee), Billy Nicholas and John Douthwaite (Newcastle), Errol Herrington (Piet Retief) and Abraham Louw (Mahawane).
In the preliminary round of the play-offs John accounted for Doug to enter the semi-finals where he then got the better of Abraham.
Billy met Errol in the other semi-final and his win saw to an all Newcastle final. Light drizzle and overnight rain made conditions fairly tricky but in the end John managed to edge out Billy to become a young seniors winner.
