Veronica continues with her winning ways

Veronica Malan put the cherry on top by achieving the honour of winning the Ladies’ Senior District Singles in Estcourt

Did I say it was Veronica Malan’s year in 2014? Well, she put the cherry on top by achieving the honour of winning the Ladies’ Senior District Singles on Sunday in Estcourt. Our congratulations to you, Veronica – you are the champion!

The weekend proved to be one of outstanding singles play, with the winners of all the Zone singles competing for District honours on greens that Estcourt had prepared with due diligence and great care. Plus the weather was conducive to good bowls, with no wind or rain to impede any game. Runner-up to Veronica was Margaret van Heusden of Vryheid.

The Men’s Senior District champion is John Douthwaite of Newcastle with 8 plus 47, closely followed by Barry Mutlow of Richards Bay on 8 plus 43. In the Open Singles, Shaun Hughes was going great guns until Sunday when the wheels fell off. Dione Leaity of Empangeni was the one who kept his focus and came out on top with 8 plus 23, with runner-up Sid Price of Newcastle with 6 plus 19.

The Ladies’ Open was won by Nola Dreyer of Vryheid with 8 plus 9, followed by Nan Roos of Dundee on 6 plus 14. There were a couple of marathon games played, the last of which was Nan playing Ronel Greeff, which lasted 29 ends and ended with Nan winning by two shots. That’s bowls – so close and yet so far, as Ronel would have been the champion if she had been the winner!

The majority of these singles players will be going to Newcastle this weekend to compete in the District Masters Championships and we wish them good bowling and good weather.

At club level, there will be sponsored Tabs-in by Shenaaz on Sunday at 9.30am, followed by a bring ‘n braai for pure enjoyment of the lovely weather. Pro 10 commences on Sunday, February 1, and you should get your teams entered in good time.

“Live, love and laugh with bowls”.
