Burnt End

The Newcastle Bowling Club hosted the Time Freight KZNCB Master Singles Championships last weekend, with 12 men and 12 women competing in this prestigious competition.

Barbara Baleri won Section A of the women’s pool from Klipbank. Besting her opponents, she won all five of her games (10 + 31) with Newcastle’s Alice Howe second on (eight + 15).

Section B was won by Klipbank’s Veronica Malan (six + 17) followed by Richards Bay’s Ronel Greef (six+14) to set up an all Klipbank final.

The final was hotly contested with peels being called a few times before Mrs Malan gradually pulled away to take the coveted title for the first time.

This completed a hat trick of titles for Mrs Malan having won the KZNCB Champions of Champions, the KZNCB senior Singles title and now the Masters – an amazing run indeed!

Section A of the men’s section was won by Vryheid’s Phillip Scheepers (six + 26) followed by Mike Bowman from Eshowe (six + 8) and Newcastle’s Norman Forbes (six + one).

Section B was won by Richard Bay’s Dion Leiaty (eight + 20) with Vryheid’s Hogarth Gevers (six + 18) filling second place.

Dion got into his stride early in the final and his consistent play kept him ahead throughout the game to add the Masters title to the Open Singles title he won the previous weekend.

On the home front local players are reminded of the Pro 10 competition to be played this weekend – entries close on Friday night.
