The Northern zone men and ladies pairs competition was played in Vryheid last weekend with 18 and 10 teams entered respectively.
After cross sectional play, the section winners entered the knock-out stage with Vryheid’s John Cross and Nolan Malan beating Brendon and Flippie van Vreden (Piet Retief) in the quarter finals.
In another quarter final game, Phillip Scheepers and Hogart Gevers(Vryheid) beat Volksrust’s Tony de Pooter and Gerhard Smith.
They then went on to beat Donald Marshall and Jo de la Rosa (Piet Retief) to qualify for the final.
Andries Fouche and Bertus van Vreden (Piet Retief) beat John and Nolan in the other semi-final game. The final between Phillip and Hogart, and Andries and Bertus was an extremely close affair with the game being decided on the last head with Andries and Bertus winning 14 – 12.
The ladies title was won by Newcastle’s Alice Howe and Ann Wood who beat Ilva Zoeppritz and Betina Malan(Vryheid) in the final.
Third place was won by the Dundee pair, Hannelie Arndt and Essie Slabbert.
The South African Inter Districts Bowling Championships get under way on Monday, March 9.
KZNCB will again be represented at all the competitions. The men and ladies A teams will be playing in Durban, the B teams in Pretoria and the senior ladies in George and senior men in Oudtshoorn.
The following Newcastle members have been selected for the representative teams and all are wished good bowling for the week: Ladies A-Michelle Steele, Samantha Shaw and Alice Howe. Mens A – John and Trevor Douthwaite. Ladies B – Sue Hutchinson; Men’s B – Fritz Botha, Douglas Steele and Stephen Shaw. Ladies seniors – Dorothy Crosbie and Marie Botha. Men’s seniors – Ron Howe.
