Storming horses and cavalry sports

Equestrian enthusiasts convened at Newcastle Show Grounds last Saturday for the annual Majuba Tent Pegging event.

Tent pegging is a cavalry sport and is one of only 10 recognised disciplines officially recognised by the International Equestrian Federation.

Riders used edged weapons for ground targets and while it may seem easy from the sideline, the sport required a lot of practice and discipline.

Riders from Newcastle and as far as Bloemfontein and Durban participated.

After putting themselves and their horses through strenuous routines, riders enjoyed a social evening.
