GALLERY: A clean sweep for Vryheid Rugby Club

It was a white-knuckle finish, but the score at the final whistle was 26 - 27 in favour of the home team. Chris Pretorius was named Man of the Match for the Forwards while Richard Garner was named Man of the Match for the Backs.

THERE may have been a chill in the air on Friday night with Winter slowly approaching, but the atmosphere was nothing less than electric at Vryheid Rugby Club.

Vryheid’s second team, who warmed up in new shirts generously sponsored by Dee’s Restaurant and Bar, went up against Piet Retief’s second team in the first match of the evening, claiming yet another victory in what can only be described as an impressive winning streak thus far.

Vryheid Rugby Club's second team has been racking up the wins this season, with Friday night's match being no exception. Andrew Marchington of Dee's Restaurant and Pub in Vryheid attended the match, having sponsored the team's warm up shirts.

Following the success of the second team, Vryheid’s first team took to the field and finally brought home a victory, beating Piet Retief by 33 – 16 in an exhilarating encounter on home soil.

While the first team’s season has not started as well as the second team’s, perhaps the tremendous public support this season and last week’s encouraging words by first team Captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen, have uplifted the spirits of the players, instilling in them a drive and determination to stand together and show what they’re made of.
