Vryheid Rugby Club – ‘Vryheid, een klap!’
Die-hard fans may recall the absolute annihilation Volksrust endured at the hands of Vryheid's first team last season when, on Vryheid soil, the visitors were defeated by a staggering 116 - 0. Their second team also failed to score against Vryheid's impressive 55.
Vryheid Rugby Club travelled to Volksrust on Friday night, May 8 to lock horns with Volksrust Rugby Club.
Die-hard fans may recall the absolute annihilation Volksrust endured at the hands of Vryheid’s first team last season when, on Vryheid soil, the visitors were defeated by a staggering 116 – 0. Their second team also failed to score against Vryheid’s impressive 55.
Friday night’s matches belonged to Vryheid Rugby Club once more as both the first and second teams outplayed Volksrust, this time on their own turf.
The second team stole victory from the hosts in the second half of the match, ending on a high with a score of 45 – 5 in favour of Vryheid, yet another victory in their current winning streak with seven tries to Volksrust’s one. Try scorers for the second team were J Barnard; M Magubane; Z Dlamini; W Steele and N Khulu, with three conversions from J Barnard and two from M Stride. Man of the Match for the Backline was W Steele and for the Forwards, J Kruger.
“Julle maak my trots, boys,” said second team coach, Carel Burger on social media, “hou so aan.”
The first team match left the hosts lagging behind as Vryheid snatched victory 40 – 17 at the final whistle. Man of the Match, J Herbst scored two of the six tries and three conversions, while the remaining four tries were scored by A Holtzhauzen, C Holtzhauzen and team Captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen, who scored twice. Reserve, M Hattingh scored two conversions.
“Nog een, boys! Well done.” said first team Captain, Wessie Van Der Westhuyzen. “Wel, wat kan ons sê? Ek is baie trots op elke liewe een. Ons werk stop nie nou dat ons wen nie, maar begin nou om daai gel soos sement te maak.”
“Ons as klub staan sterk,” he added, “en dis te danke aan baie mense en te min spasie. So kom ons staan sterk en baklei vir daai wapen. Soos Oom Hennie Badenhorst sal sê: “Vryheid, een klap!” vir die wat weet wat dit beteken.”
