The organisers of the Paruk’s Hardware Blood Buddy Memel to Newcastle Walk confirmed recently the 50-kilometre run is a qualifier for two marathons.
These are the Comrades and the Old Mutual Two Oceans respectively.
August 1 marks this year’s event, the 22nd since 12 pupils and three teachers of Amajuba High School set off from Memel to Newcastle in 1993.
Last year, about 2000 people took part.
Having evolved from a local men-only event, the walk now includes walking, running and cycling across varying distances, still including the iconic 50km Relay.

The SPCA needs your support – the society will be the recipient of 20 per cent of the profits this year, donated through the Ncandu 86 Round Table.
