Six Newcastle racers made tracks in Groblersdal last weekend.
After a morning packing up cars, gear, tools, spares and stocking the cool boxes, a small group made the journey to the Loskop Raceway on June 26.
This was for the first leg of the South African Regional Championships.
Representing Newcastle were Johann de Jager, Cathleen de Jager, JP Bruin, Pieter Bester Junior, Koos van der Merwe and Dewald Botha.
And these locals didn’t disappoint!
JP earned himself first place in the 1600s, a close finish ahead of Cathleen de Jager, while Johann de Jager took the fourth position overall.
Koos claimed a deserved third place out of 20 entrants in the 2-litre class.
Dewald Botha suffered with a faulty radiator and was unfortunate to not complete the final race in the same class.
In the 1660s, Pieter was seventh overall.
Thus, Newcastle brought home three trophies from the six racers, and competitors thanked friends, family and supporters for making their achievements possible.
Special thanks were given to sponsors of towing vehicles, racing fuel and diesel.
“We are proud to be part of the Newcastle Raceway Club and we are still growing from strength to strength,” club representatives said.
The second leg of the SA Regionals takes place in Volksrust on September 5.
On a local level, the next Newcastle race meeting is on July 25 from 6pm – for more information, contact Boet Buys on 083 467 6660 or Johann de Jager on 084 300 0971.
